You’re the speaker for all and must be impartial, Azhar told

Be genuinely “fair-minded” in completing your obligations, Dewan Rakyat Speaker Azhar Azizan Harun has been reminded by his archetype.

Talking at an online gathering today, previous Dewan Rakyat speaker Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof said his analysis of Azhar was in regards to unprejudiced nature.

“As a Dewan Rakyat Speaker, you must be fair-minded. You can’t favor the chief.

“The Speaker is the speaker of the entire house, for the wellbeing of paradise. Somebody needs to advise him.

“The person should be fair-minded. You can’t secure a clergyman. You can’t recommend a response to the clergyman,” he said at the discussion named “Whither Democracy and Constitutional Monarchy in Malaysia today?”

Ariff said this is the place where the current Speaker had purportedly not observed the principles and shows of his position.

Azhar had recently been blamed for taking sides when he contributed during a discussion in the Dewan Rakyat between finance serve Tengku Zafrul Aziz and Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng on a 1MDB settlement.

Lim had inquired as to whether the US$3.9 billion settlement concurrence with Goldman Sachs had been talked about and settled upon by the Cabinet.

Before Tengku Zafrul could reply, Azhar said: “This is a choice by the money service and it would clearly have been brought to the Cabinet.”

Accordingly, Azhar rubbished claims that he had favored one side.

On the bigger inquiry of what wasn’t right with Parliament, comparable to poor people or awful conduct of certain MPs, Ariff said everybody expected to ask themselves that inquiry.

“We need to ask what’s going on with us? What’s going on with me? (That) we have a lot of jokers who make issues in the house.

“We put the jokers there, through the political set-up.

“Yet, there are a large number of us who might aimlessly follow, indiscriminately toe the partisan division, no matter what. This is the place where things need to change.”

The discussion was facilitated by OHMSI Perdana Forum.
